Cost-effective TRIAC dimmer: BL-TRIAC against a Lutron QSGR-3P or Schneider L5504D2A system quote
A cost-effective TRIAC dimmer decision starts from the quote, not from a discount percentage. The BL-TRIAC note lists no selling price. BL-TRIAC is the in-supply block that turns a phase-cut waveform into PWM. Lutron QSGR-3P, Schneider L5504D2A, and the other parts below are wall controls or dimming systems named in that note. Treat them as bench-evaluation counterparts. They are not drop-in replacements.
Jarwey builds BL-TRIAC per project. It is not catalog stock, and it is not the wall plate. Wiring lives in the leading/trailing-edge hookup note. The design handoff lives in the custom-requirement note. This page does not repeat either one.
What the system line item actually buys
The note splits the counterparts into panels and systems. A panel is the user interface on the wall. A system carries the phase-cut protocol and the circuit. BL-TRIAC sits in a constant-voltage or constant-current LED supply: RC filter, op-amp conditioning, MCU ADC, dimming curve, PWM. Power-up includes soft-start. If the open item is only that block inside the supply, a full imported dimming-system quote is paying for the panel and the system.
Counterparts to evaluate on the bench
| Brand | Part in the note | Role in the note | Relation to BL-TRIAC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opple | Leading-edge P068102 | Dimmer panel | Evaluate on the bench, not a drop-in |
| Panasonic | WMY549 | Dimmer panel | Evaluate on the bench, not a drop-in |
| Legrand | VRCM2 | Dimmer panel | Evaluate on the bench, not a drop-in |
| Siemens | 5UH82223-NC01 | Dimmer panel | Evaluate on the bench, not a drop-in |
| Lutron | Leading-edge QSGR-3P | Dimming system | Evaluate on the bench, not a drop-in |
| Siemens | 5WG1 528-1D801 (search form 5WG1528-1D801) | Dimming system | Evaluate on the bench, not a drop-in |
| Schneider | Leading-edge L5504D2A | Dimming system | Evaluate on the bench, not a drop-in |
Where the note says the module works with most panels, the external wording stays: evaluate together, then verify. A part that is not on this list needs its own sample. Do not reuse a pass result from a different panel.
Numbers that decide whether the module fits the supply
The quote split is only useful when the supply already has the auxiliary rail and the frequency row matches the load. Figures below are copied from the note. Nothing is filled in beyond it.
| Item | Min | Typ | Max |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supply voltage | 12V | 15V | 30V |
| Supply current | — | 5mA | 10mA |
| PWM duty | 0% | — | 100% |
| Dimming curve | Logarithmic by default; the curve can be customized | ||
| Load | Resistor | PWM frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic track, TRIAC out, constant voltage | R18 = 10kΩ | 10kHz |
| LED strip, TRIAC out, constant voltage | R19 = 10kΩ | 16kHz |
| Fixture, TRIAC out, constant current | Resistor not stated | 1kHz |
Pin names in the note: ACL, pin 2 ACN, VCC, pin 4 GND, pin 5 SW, pin 6 PWM, pin 7 AGND, pin 8 VDD, pin 9 DIMIN/PWM OUT. SW and the high-side PWM function can be customized. The hookup table stays in the earlier article.
Quote-split checklist
- Name the layer. Wall panel, dimming system, or phase-cut-to-PWM inside the supply. Do not collapse the three into one line called dimmer.
- Match the part. If the installed panel is not in the table, sample that part on its own.
- Edge. Leading or trailing, checked against pin 5 SW with the field waveform. Firmware can change; retest after the change. A code edit is not a completed replacement.
- Load row. Magnetic constant-voltage uses R18 / 10kHz. Strip constant-voltage uses R19 / 16kHz. Constant-current fixtures use 1kHz. The note leaves the constant-current resistor blank. Do not invent one.
- Aux rail. The supply must provide 12V to 30V (15V typical) at 5mA typical, 10mA max. Without that rail the module cannot be fitted, and the system quote cannot be split.
- Out of scope. BL-TRIAC is not the wall plate, not a drop-in for QSGR-3P or L5504D2A, and not catalog stock.
- Before the BOM locks. Sample with the field panel and the target supply. Request the specification from Jarwey.
Design changes and lead time, one line
Curve, interface, PWM frequency, edge-sense logic, and OEM marking can follow the project. That handoff is the custom note. Samples and small lots follow the project date. Prices are not in this page.
