650V GaN for adapters: TP65H150G4PS vs 35/50mΩ totem-pole split

On adapters, low-power SMPS, and lighting supplies, the usual blockers are: whether GaN is worth it, and whether you need a low-RDS(on) totem-pole part or a 150 mΩ adapter-class FET. Power density and efficiency matter, but an adapter BOM should not inherit a high-current PFC device by default.

Why adapters need a separate 150 mΩ path

Consumer adapters and low-power SMPS care about size, standby, EMI, and whether common gate drivers can drive the FET. TP65H150G4PS targets AC-DC / DC-DC; the product page lists adapters, low-power SMPS, and lighting. TO-220 with a common-source layout helps parallel-eval against existing silicon TO-220 tooling (bench required; not a drop-in claim).

Versus 35 / 50 mΩ totem-pole parts, the first split is power tier and topology: lower RDS(on) fits higher-current bridgeless PFC; adapter designs usually fail first on thermal, EMI, and drive matching—not on chasing the lowest on-resistance.

Adapter / low-power SMPS checklist (7 items)

  1. Topology / power: flyback / QR / other AC-DC; does the thermal budget fit a 150 mΩ tier?
  2. Footprint: existing TO-220 pitch, insulator, creepage for no-respin parallel eval.
  3. Gate drive: do common silicon drivers match the recommended drive window (datasheet).
  4. Hard vs soft switching: efficiency and EMI targets—do not judge by static RDS(on) alone.
  5. Thermal: case rise at full load and elevated ambient.
  6. Surge / overvoltage: transient OV and surge current vs input-surge cases.
  7. Samples: archive datasheet revision, sample, then pilot; contact Jarwey for lead time.
