BL-TRIAC PWM dimmer module: high-side PWM pin versus DIMIN that drives the MOSFET

Jarwey 1 2026-10-19 15:38:03

A phase-cut LED driver can carry two nets that both get called PWM. On the BL-TRIAC note, pin 6 is the high-side PWM output, and pin 9 is named DIMIN/PWM OUT with the job “drive the MOSFET directly.” Those are separate exits. Shorting them together is not what the note describes.

Jarwey builds this module against a project. It is not a catalog part, and it is not the wall control. Leading-edge and trailing-edge hookup is already written up in the CV/CC wiring note. The 16 kHz / 10 kHz / 1 kHz load rows are in the frequency-row note. This page only settles which supply pair feeds the module, and which pin the PWM leaves on.

Two supply pairs, two PWM pins

Names below are the ones printed in the BL-TRIAC module note. ACL and VCC have no pin number there, so none is added here.

PinNameWhat the note assigns
unnumberedACLLine input, after the fuse. Not the 12–30 V module rail.
2ACNNeutral input.
unnumberedVCCModule positive, taken from the high-voltage auxiliary. Pairs with pin 4 GND.
4GNDModule negative, high-voltage ground.
5SWSenses the TRIAC voltage and steers the leading/trailing peripheral. Function can be customized.
6PWMHigh-side PWM output. Function can be customized. Not pin 9.
7AGNDModule negative from the secondary. Pairs with pin 8 VDD.
8VDDModule positive from the secondary.
9DIMIN/PWM OUTPWM output that drives the MOSFET directly. Not pin 6.

The note does not say the high-voltage auxiliary pair and the secondary pair may be tied in parallel, and it does not say a single ground is enough. Pick the pair the driver actually has before the sample is built.

Rail and duty, only the numbers in the note

ItemMinTypMax
Supply voltage12 V15 V30 V
Supply currentnot stated5 mA10 mA
PWM duty0%not stated100%
Dimming curveLogarithmic by default; a different curve is a custom item

The path in the note is RC filter, op-amp conditioning, MCU A/D, dimming curve, then PWM, for deep dimming. Power-up includes a soft start. No soft-start time is given, so none is stated here. The default curve is logarithmic. Changing that curve is a design request, not a rename of the 0% and 100% endpoints.

The load row does not choose the PWM pin

Load rowResistorPWM frequency
Magnetic track, TRIAC out, constant voltageR18 = 10 kΩ10 kHz
LED strip, TRIAC out, constant voltageR19 = 10 kΩ16 kHz
Fixture, TRIAC out, constant currentresistor not stated1 kHz

R18 and R19 are both 10 kΩ. Equal resistance does not make those rows the same part, and it does not make pin 6 interchangeable with pin 9. Match the row to the load name in the frequency note.

Where custom work, price, and lead time sit

  • Custom build. You send the project constraints; Jarwey does the design, the implementation plan, and the delivery. Pin 5 SW and pin 6 PWM are marked as customizable functions, and a nonstandard phase-cut can be handled in firmware. If the high-side PWM must mean something other than the default note, that is a design line, not a resistor change on the bench. What to hand over is in the custom-requirement note.
  • Price. Lutron QSGR-3P (leading edge), Schneider L5504D2A (leading edge), Siemens 5UH82223-NC01 and 5WG1 528-1D801, Panasonic WMY549, Legrand VRCM2, and Opple P068102 (leading edge) are the controls named in the note. A system quote is paying for the wall control or the system. BL-TRIAC is the PWM stage inside the driver. You do not have to fund the imported wall-control premium for that stage. Any of those controls still has to be checked on the board; this is not an unverified replacement. How the quote splits is in the cost note.
  • Lead time. Samples and small lots are scheduled against the project. Lock two facts before the sample: which supply pair, and whether the downstream stage takes pin 6 or pin 9. The note has no day count and no minimum order. How that schedule is kept is in the small-batch note.

Checklist before the sample

  1. Rail that exists: high-voltage auxiliary, or secondary only. Land on VCC/GND or VDD/AGND inside 12 V, 15 V typical, 30 V max.
  2. Current: the chosen rail must cover 5 mA typical and 10 mA max. No minimum current is printed.
  3. Ground: pair GND with VCC, or AGND with VDD. Do not leave the return off.
  4. Exit pin: the MOSFET gate path wants pin 9; a high-side PWM consumer wants pin 6. Do not tie the pins.
  5. Custom flag: if pin 6 or SW must change meaning, write that with the curve choice (default log, or a requested curve) into the design brief.
  6. Frequency row: 10 kHz track, 16 kHz strip, 1 kHz constant-current fixture. Do not infer the PWM pin from the kilohertz.
  7. Sample: freeze the pair and the pin, then build. Request the datasheet from Jarwey. Wall controls stay a bench check.
